DEFAMATION

 Meaning: Damaging a person's reputation.

Synonyms: Slander, calumny, libel.

Antonym: Acclaim, applause, compliment.

Usage:
1) The newspaper was sued for defamation after publishing lies about a celebrity.
2) Although the newspaper editor has the freedom of speech, he cannot hide behind that right when he damages a person's name through defamation.
3) In a defamation trial, the plaintiff  must prove his or her reputation was actually harmed by a statement.
