‘On the bed’ or ‘In the bed’. Which one is correct?

I was always confused about these two phrases and could not decide which one would be correct. Though I read sentences which used both phases ‘on the bed’ and ‘in the bed’ at different times, but never could differentiate between these two and was unable to use them correctly.
Finally I got to know difference and  proper uses of these phrases and publishing them for you guys.
Grammatically both of them are correct and their meaning differs slightly on the use of prepositions in and on as explained below.
Let us take example of sleeping.
On the bed
Sleeping on the bed refers to the laying on the surface of that furniture what is called bed, means if someone is laying at the top of bed and not using any cover or blanket.
Once more, on the bed  means you are sitting or laying on top of the blanket and bed spread.
In the bed
Sleeping in the bed refers to laying inside the bedclothes, means you are between bed and cover.
If you are underneath a blanket or duvet, you should use ‘in the bed’.
These two cases are explained below using pictures.

Girl is sitting on the bed.

Boy is sleeping in the bed.

Got it ??
